Daffodil Day

“Daffodil are my favourite flower and I have used them in my paintings from the very start. I love everything about them. They have a very strong and sturdy shape , their colour is vibrant and glowing and generally yellow which happens also to be my favourite colour, although I have painted them blue! Over the years they have symbolized many things to me , mainly hope and strength. To see a daffodil peeping out of the ground with its spear like leaves on a hard cold day in late winter is a sight to behold. The wonder of its bright yellow flower is a sure sign that spring is on its way. And I’m sure that is why the Cancer Society chose this flower as their logo. Like many people cancer has effected my family too with my mother surviving three separate bouts of cancer over the past twenty years and some of my relatives and friends dying as a result of it. Needless to say this day is therefore an important day to support" - artist Paul D'Arcy

Monies raised on Daffodil Day will fund the Society’s free night nursing service for patients at the advanced stage of the illness, the funding of hospital based cancer liaison nurses and the funding of cancer homecare teams, who work in the community to provide specialist palliative care to patients with cancer in their own homes. Daffodil Day monies also used to fund the Cancer Information Services Helpline (Free phone 1800 200 700), which is staffed by nurses trained in cancer care, who offer advice, information and support to anyone worried about any aspect of cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment. In 2008, the Cancer Information Service looked after approximately 16,500 enquiries.
